I was also surprised that Knight’s principal character is a coroner and yet Ash’s city of Lincoln has no such official.Īsh does a commendable job of creating the scene and providing details of daily life, both for residents of the castle and the forest. Having just read Bernard Knight’s The Noble Outlaw, which is set only five years prior to Death of a Squire, I found it interesting that another Robin Hood-like character appears in this book as well. ![]() ![]() Poachers are initially suspected, but as Bascot learns more about the victim, additional motives, both personal and political, are revealed which lead to suspects within the town walls. Prior to the arrival of the King, a squire serving the sheriff’s brother is found hanged from a tree in the forest. This is the second Templar Knight mystery featuring Bascot de Marins, his servant, Gianni and the other characters living in Lincoln castle early in the reign of King John (1200 AD) and it is an improvement over the first, The Alehouse Murders. ![]()

Burnett is busy channeling elements of everything she played on her 11-year variety show, and it works well in the framework of sarcastic dialogue. It's an easy film to believe, though everything is secondary to the roles of Carol Burnett and Charles Grodin. It plays very much like a pilot for a TV series, and as far as family comedy/drama shows go, it would have made a very good one. Something like "The Grass Is Always Greener Over the Septic Tank" is an ideal example of both. Often, and perhaps at their best, they were adaptations of novels or screenplays deemed either too low-key for cinema or uncomplicated enough to manage on a small budget. ![]() ![]() Mnesarchus was a merchant who came from Tyre, and there is a story ( and ) that he brought corn to Samos at a time of famine and was granted citizenship of Samos as a mark of gratitude. ![]() Pythagoras's father was Mnesarchus ( and ), while his mother was Pythais and she was a native of Samos. Some historians treat all this information as merely legends but, even if the reader treats it in this way, being such an early record it is of historical importance. There is fairly good agreement on the main events of his life but most of the dates are disputed with different scholars giving dates which differ by 20 years. What we present below is an attempt to collect together the most reliable sources to reconstruct an account of Pythagoras's life. ![]() We do have details of Pythagoras's life from early biographies which use important original sources yet are written by authors who attribute divine powers to him, and whose aim was to present him as a god-like figure. The society which he led, half religious and half scientific, followed a code of secrecy which certainly means that today Pythagoras is a mysterious figure. Unlike many later Greek mathematicians, where at least we have some of the books which they wrote, we have nothing of Pythagoras's writings. He is an extremely important figure in the development of mathematics yet we know relatively little about his mathematical achievements. Biography Pythagoras of Samos is often described as the first pure mathematician. ![]() ![]() The pope’s apology and his insistence on the need for renewal in the Church are informed by texts that he has been drawing on for thirty years, says Austen Ivereigh. ![]() Last month, Pope Francis wrote to the bishops of Chile to say sorry for his initial response to the clerical abuse crisis in the country. ![]() |
